Zero Calorie Soda with NO artificial sweeteners? It's possible... but does it taste good?

Zevia Taste Test and Review

Soda is full of calories (thanks to sugar), but the usual chemical alternatives (aspartame for instance) are usually linked to diseases such as cancer. And "all-natural" alternatives are often presumed to taste bad.

Do they though? We put four kids & a mom to the test with Zevia sodas (made with stevia as a sweetener) to find out!

I received this product for free from the sponsor of the Moms Meet™ program, May Media Group LLC, who received it directly from the manufacturer. As a Moms Meet™ blogger, I agree to use this product and post my opinion on my blog. My opinions do not necessarily reflect the opinions of May Media Group LLC or the manufacturer of this product.

A Few Zevia Facts!

  • Zevia is sweetened naturally with a blend of high-purity Stevia (grown in the US!) and Monk Fruit.
  • Zevia comes in 15 different flavors so everyone can get their favorite!
  • Zevia contains no calories, sugar or artificial sweeteners.
  • Zevia is kosher, vegan and gluten-free.
  • Zevia retails in a 6-pack for anywhere between $3.99 and $5.99.

Our Testers:

In addition to our mom-tester (gotta have mom's stamp of approval, right?) we enlisted four volunteers (two boys and two girls) between the ages of 4 & 12 to test out the Zevia soda. "L" is an 9-year-old girl; "N" is a 12-year-old girl; "B" is a 4-year-old boy; "J" is a 7-year-old boy. And our mom tester says she's been "21" for the past decade. Check out the test results & commentary below!

Zevia Root Beer

"L" & our mom tester both thought the same: "The first taste is good, but the aftertaste isn't."
"N" says: "It's good, but I don't like the aftertaste.
"J" & "B" both think it tastes good all-around.
Percent of our testers that would drink the Zevia Root Beer again? 100%

Zevia Cola

"L" & "N" agreed: "The first taste is just like Pepsi, but the aftertaste is like off-brand cola."
Our mom tester, "J", and "B" all liked the cola flavor and agreed it was better than the root beer.
Percent of our testers that would drink the Zevia Cola again? 100%

Dr. Zevia

"L" says: "It tastes like really healthy strawberry soda.
"N": "It tastes like candy."
"J": "I think it tastes like cherries."
Our mom tester and "B" both liked it. Everyone agreed it was better than the root beer and cola flavor.

Zevia Cream Soda

"L": "Aftertaste is medicine-y."
"N": "Really good at the start but the aftertaste is bitter."
"J": "I think it tastes like fizzy root beer."
Our mom tester: "After the kids said it was a bitter, I thought I wouldn't like it, but I think it tastes pretty good!"
"B" sat the rest of the tests out after this one because his tiny tummy had about as much carbonation as it could take for the afternoon!
Percent of our testers that would drink the Zevia Cream Soda again? 50%

Zevia Black Cherry

"L": "Smells good, but tastes bad. I thought this would be my favorite."
"N": "Definitely better than the cream soda, this is my favorite so far."
"J": "I love it!"
Our mom tester: "It's better than I thought it would be."

"J": "I love it!"
Our mom tester: "The taste is okay, but it doesn't smell very good!"

"N": "I don't like grapefruit, but I like this!"
"J": "This was definitely the very best one."
Our mom tester: "Wow, this is surprising. I didn't think I would like this flavor, but this turns out to be the best of all!"
Percent of our testers that would drink the Zevia Grapefruit again? 100%

Our Mom Tester Sums It Up:

"I think that in an ideal situation, this is the type of beverage that is perfect for someone who already has cut sugar out of their regular eating habits for dietary reasons or otherwise. After you get bit by the sugar-bug, it's hard to let go! I noticed that "J" had an easier time accepting all the sodas, and I think it's because he hasn't been given many sweet sodas in his lifetime. While I'm not certain how completely I trust the stevia ingredient at this point, I know that it's a lot better than aspartame. This is definitely one to think on, and I'm going to share this with my diabetic friends for sure - this would be a game-changer for them. It's also nice to know that if I decide to do a low-carb diet again, this will be here waiting for me. I got so sick of drinking "just water" last time I dieted!"

KitchenAid Artisan Sweepstakes

My kitchens have never been brand-new or filled with top-of-the-line items, but they've always been filled with happiness and good food. That doesn't mean that I'm immune to an adoration of new kitchen products however, and over the years there are a few brands that I've loved to see newly-sitting on my countertops or in my drawers.

One of those brands is KitchenAid. Not only is this a brand that has stretched back since my great-grandma's time, but it's a brand whose products last and work for decades. Even now, my mother has a KitchenAid stand mixer that belonged to my great-grandmother sitting in her kitchen and she uses it on a frequent basis!

Because of this, I was more than happy to chip in to this giveaway to give my readers a shot at a KitchenAid stand mixer of their own. (Don't worry, this one isn't from my grandma's day, it's a brand-spankin' new one!)

You won't believe which diaper brand is my favorite... Hint: It's a store brand.

Well Beginnings Diaper Review

When you think of "quality" diapers, popular name brands are probably the first ones that come to mind. When people think about buying "cheap" diapers though, they usually think of store-brand diapers that are perceived to be flimsy.

I've actually discovered a diaper that is both inexpensive and high-quality, and it's not from my usual grocery or super store.

The diapers I found were at Walgreens.

I discovered these thanks to a helpful pharmacist who asked if I'd tried the diapers in their Well Beginnings line yet. I hadn't, and when I checked them out, I was thrilled to see that they were not only cheaper than my usual name-brand, but they came with more diapers!

When Moms Meet (a site I absolutely love for finding great products) asked me if I'd like to apply for a campaign promoting this brand, I hopped on-board with confidence. Although I received a Well Beginnings product package from Moms Meet for free in order to do my review, please know that my opinions and ideas are my own.

So what makes these diapers so great?

In addition to being affordable, these diapers were fantastically leak-free. I also discovered that the Newborn, Size 1 and Size 2 diapers all come with a wetness indicator that turns blue when baby needs a change. That means you'll be able to find out whether your little one needs a new diaper without disturbing them too much!

Made in USA diapers, snug fit, & affordable.

Did our baby have leaks?

For the most part, we had zero leaks. However, we did have one of those "Number 3" moments, which is really only something a parent can understand, and it's difficult to explain it in words. (This commercial from an Australian company captures the sentiment quite nicely though.) We got through our #3, but not without a bit of "Oh-my-goodness it's on the bed!!! Somebody do something!!!" being screamed by both my husband and I. Barring an episode like this though (by the way, don't feed your baby apple juice and applesauce in the same meal or you will have this episode) these diapers hold up really well.

Another great selling point?

These diapers are made in the U.S.A. Why is that good? Because 'Murica! Seriously though, as someone that grew up in the Midwest I can honestly say that having products manufactured in the US is not only great for our country because it promotes a good economy, but because in some instances a single factory can be the difference between a community's success or failure. My own hometown is largely dependent on the factories around us, and whenever they close or have big cutbacks, hundreds of families are left in desperate need.

Well Beginnings isn't just for diapers though...

This line has lots of products that will fit your baby needs! Wipes, baby wash, baby powder, training pants, etc. I was sent some baby wipes, baby wash, and pediatric electrolyte solution in addition to the diapers, and I was just as happy with those products as I was with the diapers. I haven't used the electrolyte solution because (thankfully) my kiddos are feeling fine for now, but if we get into a situation where dehydration is a possibility I will definitely write a separate review.

As for the wipes:

They were nice and soft. I loved that they were gentle but thick. Some thick wipes bother me because it feels like I'm just sliding the "mess" around on my baby's bum, but these actually absorb the yucky stuff without feeling flimsy.

Well Beginnings Baby Wipes

As for the baby wash:

It was awesome! My daughter is a wiggle-worm in the tub, so I've got to wash her in a rush. The fact that this doubled as a shampoo was a time-saver for me. Usually I don't care for the 2-in-1 type of products because I've seen so many that cause my hair to be coarse, but this left my little sweetie's hair soft and manageable. Just look at that mop of pretty curls!

Well Beginnings Baby Wash

Bonus #MomHack!

Because Well Beginnings is a big supporter of moms helping other moms, they've asked me to share one of my #MomHacks! Mine is that I got my kids to love salads by cutting up chicken nuggets on top of lettuce and adding a little cheese and ranch dressing. It's super-easy to prepare, and because kids tend to associate nuggets with food-happiness, they will devour it in no time! My kids both ask for salad now when we go grocery shopping, and I think that is pretty awesome.

Overall:

I am definitely happy with this product line. I was already a fan before this campaign, and I hope that any moms out there who are reading this will take this brand for a test-drive.

Want to feed your pet something amazing? Get Petbrosia.

Petbrosia Dog Food Review

I'm sure that at some point in life, you've spoken to your doctor, or maybe a nutritionist, about the types of food you eat. By the time we reach adulthood, many of us know what foods we need to steer clear of if we want to lose weight or avoid an upset stomach.

The foods that are right for our optimum health are partly based off of our activity levels and genetic makeup. We would never create a blend of food for people that was a one-size-fits-all because there just isn't any such thing.

So why do we think it should be any different for our dogs?

Our dog-food dilemma:

Since we brought our pup into the family, we've been concerned with feeding her the right foods. Sometimes we even make her a special doggy-dish of beans and rice with healthy ingredients like chicken & carrots to round it out. Cooking for your dog is probably one of the healthiest things you can do for him or her, but unfortunately not everyone has the time for this. (I know I don't!)

While our Casey still enjoys her "home-cooked" meal once or twice a month, for the most part we have to buy dog food. We don't want to feed her just anything though! Have you ever checked the ingredients on some of those dog food brands at the store? Even the ones that claim to be healthier have corn meal listed as a first ingredient! Last I checked, dogs liked meat better than corn, and corn does a number on their stomach. (And then your dog does a number on your yard. All over your yard.)

So what to do?

While there are a lot of different premium dog foods out there that don't have corn meal as a first ingredient, I have never seen a mix like the one I received from Petbrosia. They sent me a bag to try for free in order to do my review, but as always my thoughts and opinions are my own.

What makes Petbrosia different?

They don't just give your dog good food, they give you good food for your dog. Before you can even make a purchase, you have to fill out a questionnaire that asks for specific details about your furriest family member. How much does he or she weigh? What breed? How much activity? Favorite color? (Okay, I made that last one up, but the rest are true!) What all that adds up to is ensuring that you pet gets the perfect blend of nutrients to give them long-lasting health benefits.

Petbrosia dog food kibble size

Are the ingredients high-quality?

You betcha. In addition to having ingredients that are already foods that I recognize the name of (carrots, blueberries, potatoes, chicken...) each blend has antibiotic-free and hormone-free meat as a first ingredient and has NO corn, wheat, soy, gluten, or artificial colors/flavors. You can find out more about their ingredients here. (And, check out info on their amazing grain-free salmon blend available for cats or dogs here!)

Petbrosia Ingredient List

Did my dog like it?

Very much so! As a matter of fact, our dog spent a good chunk of time sitting by the bowl the first time we gave her the food, hoping that if she pouted long enough we would give her some more. Thankfully, each order from Petbrosia comes with a its own specific feeding guidelines, so we knew exactly how much she was able to have. (She would have liked to eat the whole bag, so it was probably an extra-good thing that the bags are resealable, too!)

Dogs love Petbrosia dog food.

Prize Candles: Fun, fab, & full of surprise rings worth up to $5000!

Prize Candle Review

I absolutely adore candles. They've always been a big part of my home decor (I love matching the colors to my different room schemes!) and I've given them as gifts for as long as I can remember.

But what if you could gift a candle that had a little something extra?

When I received the opportunity from Tastemaker Mom to check out a candle that was exactly that - I was thrilled! Although I was able to check out this candle for free in order to write my review, as always my opinions are my own!

What made this candle so great?

First of all, the smell was perfect for my tastes. It was floral, but not overly heavy and had a nice perfumed scent that lingered in the house for a while after we put it out. The name of the scent I received was Jasmine Neroli.

Because the candle is made of soy it gave off a long, clean burn. If you are a candle-lover, you know that one of the worst things about a great-smelling candle is when it only lasts for a few days! The fact that this candle is slow-burning is a definite plus.

And of course the very best part is that there was a ring inside!

Soy Prize Candles

Jewelry? In a candle?

That's right! As if candles weren't pretty awesome all on their own, Prize Candles each contain a surprise ring that is worth anywhere from $10 to $5000!

How does that work? Isn't the ring covered in wax?

Nope! Thanks to a nifty little air-tight packet, your ring is safely contained until the wax has burned down far enough for you to gently wiggle the package out.

How do you know what your ring is worth?

The good folks over at Prize Candle let you know! You don't have to do any guesswork and you don't need to take your ring to a jeweler for appraisal. Each ring comes with a little slip of paper with a code on it. You simply enter the code on Prize Candle's website and tadaaa!... instant knowledge of how much your ring is worth.

Pink Ring inside Prize Candle

My ring was worth $10, but that doesn't stop me from thinking that it is a pretty great ring! I plan to give it to my sister next week as a belated birthday gift. She loves costume-type jewelry, the-girlier-the-better. Next birthday though, I'll snag her one of these candles!

Would I buy one myself?

Oh most definitely. I actually browsed around the website and found out that they frequently have deals listed throughout their social media channels and on their actual site. Percentages off, BOGO offers, special deal-of-the-day type discounts... it makes buying one of these an absolute "do".

Are they expensive?

Not really. Consider that you pay (on average) about $12 - $15 for a long-lasting soy candle. The candles from Prize Candle are around the $25 range, so even if your ring only turns out to be a $10 one, you're still breaking about even. If you're buying on a BOGO day, well, you're practically coming out ahead now, aren't you?

I plan to buy several during the next Buy One Get One sale so that I have them on hand for gifts. Can you imagine the ease of giving someone a gift that is less than $15 (if you snag that BOGO deal!) but that has the ability to be worth thousands?!

Where to buy?

You can head over to Prize Candle's website HERE to get started! They have several scents available to choose from, and all of them contain rings!

I'll make a few pennies off the sale (it doesn't cost you anything extra) and you'll help me keep my blog running so that I'm still around next year to write about the 2015 colors.

For Radiant Orchid...

I like these RSVP Sport Sunglasses from Oakley . With a hot orchid frame & silver design trim, these sunglasses will give your eyes the protection they need with all the fashion you crave!

For Royal Blue...

Meow! These sexy cat-eye sunglasses from Ivanka Trump aren't just a great match for this year's colors, they're a great way to give your face the contoured look it deserves! With a blue gradient lens and soft grey trim, these shades give you 100% UV protection without sacrificing style.

For Aluminum...

Feeling like this is your year to glam-it-up? Then you want these embellished cat-eye sunglasses from Swarovski! Not only are these sunglasses luxuriously chic, but they allow you to look fantastic whether you're at the beach, the mall, or just out for lunch with the girls.

For Aurora Red...

You don't have to be rich to get in on this year's fashion trends of course! There are lots of great-looking sunglasses out there for a fraction of the cost of a name-brand pair. If you're on a budget, but still looking to get in on the trends, I recommend these oversized sunglasses in red. Fun & functional, these will allow you to look great without killing your wallet!

For Misted Yellow...

If you have a warmer complexion with golden undertones, consider going for these cute, yellow butterfly sunglasses. Priced at less than $10, these DG sunglasses will have you looking sunny all day long without breaking the bank.

For Sangria...

There were so many wine-colored sunglasses that I loved, it was really hard to make a pick. (I am a little biased though, since this is my favorite color of all-time when I'm picking out shades!) I finally settled on these oversized driving sunglasses from Worket. Not only do I find them to be incredibly stylish, but they are anti-UVA, UVB and polarized - making them the perfect glasses for going on a long drive or an adventure outdoors!

For Mauve Mist...

This fall's mauve shade has a delicate pink undertone to it, which is why I chose these Rainbow Falls Maui Jim sunglasses to represent this color. With pink-tones in the lenses, and a pearlescent effect on the frames, these shades are not only fun to wear but fun to be seen in. And with a name like Maui Jim behind it, you can be sure that this is a pair that will last for a long time.

For Cognac...

Prefer delicate frames? You may want these oversized sunglasses from Cazal. With warm brown & gold tones gracing it's elegant design, these metal frames are sturdy and fashion-forward. They aren't for the faint-of-pocketbook though. A pair of these will set you back at least $500, so be prepared to pay!

For Bright Cobalt...

For me, everything about this color screams "vintage". I can't see a pair of sunglasses that are this bright a blue without thinking of jean jackets, crimped hair, and music videos. I love these 80's style sunglasses from Retro Rewind, and I love the $5 price even more!

For Cypress...

I thought finding a pair of green shades that were the right color and still fashion-friendly would be an insurmountable task, but it was Vera Wang to the rescue with these round-styled sunglasses! These glasses will shield your eyes from the sun's rays and keep you looking cool.
