Summer Games for the Backyard

We just passed Memorial Day weekend and summer is officially here!  It is the time when the weather is warm, kids are out of school and at home all day and you’re searching for fun things to do outside.  There are always parks nearby or some summer tourist attraction you can go see but you can’t do that every single day, no one has the time and it gets expensive.  Another option is to stay at home and find fun things to do outside for the whole family.  Let’s look at some summer games for the backyard.

Touch Football

Touch football doesn’t have to be strictly for Thanksgiving, you can play touch football anytime of the year.  That being said it might be easier to play on weekends when you can invite neighbors or extended family over for a barbecue and you have enough people to make up two teams.  It is great way to teach your kids the rules of the game and improve their skills.

Build a Soccer Field

This really isn’t as hard as it sound and you don’t need much in the way of equipment, just a couple of nets and a ball.  If you have a yard large enough for your kids to kick around a ball you can put nets at opposite ends of the yard and use landmarks to lay out the field.  The can practice things like dribbling, footwork and just trying to score some goals.

Hide and Go Seek

This is a classic game from your own childhood that you can teach your kids, no equipment needed.

Scavenger Hunts

If you want to keep the kids occupied for an afternoon then creating a scavenger hunt is a great way to do it.  You can hide random object in the yard along with having them look for common things found in the yard.  You can make backyard clues puzzles that they have to solve.   You can make this as easy or as challenging as you like, kids love solving puzzles.  They will be bugging you to do this all the time.  Here is some help putting together a scavenger hunt.

Swimming Pool

If you are fortunate enough to have a swimming pool in your backyard then you can make up some games for the pool too.  Create your own version of water polo or just have races to see who can swim to the other end of the pool the fastest.  You can practice learning new strokes or a variety of other games.  There is nothing like cooling off in the pool on a hot summer day!

These are just some of the summer games for backyards that you can try out.  Always remember to put on your sunscreen and to stay hydrated and of course, have some fun.
